on all these stories throughout the next three hours. >>> president obama today keeping his focus on jobs, as we have mentioned. the september jobs report showed a drop in the unemployment rate to 7.8%. the president said in his weekly web address that the burden is on congress to keep the economy moving forward. nbc news white house correspondent, mike viqueira joins me now. mike, what more political fallout do you think we're going to see over the jobless numbers? >> reporter: the jobs report was both symbolic and substantiative. symbolic because it got below 8%, that's considered a threshold over which no president has ever been re-elected. and substantiative because it gets down to where the unemployment rate is -- was when president obama took office in january of 2009. and don't you know, melissa, yesterday at two campaign rallies in the battleground states of virginia and ohio, one each, the president pointed that out. here at the white house, at the campaign, campaign headquarters in chicago, they are certainly hopeful that this will change the narrative, stem some of the momentum

." the september jobs report is in. and the numbers are better than expected. way better. the unemployment rate below 8% for the first time since january 2009. it's good news for president obama, after his underwhelming performance in wednesday' debate. and bad news for mitt romney, and his conspiracy-minded supporters on the republican right. more on that in a moment. according to the bureau of labor statistics, unemployment dropped to 7.8% last month down .3 of a percent since august. employers added 114,000 new jobs. including 104 in the private sector and 10,000 in the public sector which had seen months of steady decline. in july's number revised to 181,000 with an additional 40,000 new jobs. president obama shared the news with a cheering crowd at a campaign appearance in fairfax virginia. >> obama: this morning we found out that the unemployment rate had fallen to its lowest level since i office. but today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> eliot: not if

impact, and you're guaranteed, if you're obama or romney in getting the lowest unit rate, the lowest cost for the a tv spot buying from a tv station. outside groups like american crossroads have to pay a premium. president obama spends a dollar, we have to spend more than a dollar to get the same weight of television. a lot more of romney's money is found in the wallet of the republican national committee, and smaller money is found in the democratic national committee. what's that mean? if you use money from the democratic or republican national committees, you have to use what are are called combo ads in which you not only mention obama, but also democrats, or not just romney, but other republicans. it weakens the ad, the way of the power of the ad a little bit. we have an important -- lou: you feel good? go ahead. >> i do think that obama has an advantage in that more of his money is in -- is in a wallet from which he can spend easily, get the lowest rate, and control the message better than can romney. lou: not concerned about the fundraising? >> oh, i'm concerned about it. i think it

of the obama administration. when you look at the hardidate athere is no way to explain how the rate decreased from 8.1% to 7.8%. as the former director of the nonpartisan cbo put it, it is simply implausible. a few things to keep in mind. the real unemployment rate remains unchanged, 14.6%. remember, this number includes people who have left the labor force because they cannot find a job. guess what? they are no longer counted. they are nonexistent. it is the same number that it was a month ago. number 2, the real number of unemployed or under-employed increased by 100,000 since last month and stands at 23.2 million americans. here's how that number is broken down. 12 million people are unemployed, 2 1/2 million people have given up and they are no longer counted. nearly 9 million people are working part time because they cannot find a full-time job. this is what president obama calls moving forward? there are more americans unemployed and under-employed than last month and the month before that. what is a fact, barack obama promised you that by this time, if his stimulus pan was pass audio s
